During her travels in the Riverlands in A Feast for Crows, Brienne hears about “squishers,” man-eating fish creatures that walk on two legs. Notably, that’s not the only reference to sea monsters in the books. Littlefinger even has a ship called The Merlin King. Throughout the books, Martin makes references to “merlings,” sea creatures that correspond vaguely to mermaids and mermen imagined by sailors in the Middle Ages. First off, “merman” isn’t technically the right word.
